Muffins!

I happened to be walking past the gluten-free section at Walmart a couple days ago and on a whim, decided to look at a couple of baking mixes on one of the shelves. Pretty much every GF baking mix has something in it that Raya can't have, but I look at them every now and then anyway. SO. This time, it just so happened that there was a blueberry muffin mix that did NOT have rice or tree nut ingredients in it!


I think Krusteaz is kind of a gross sounding name for a food company but HOORAY FOR KRUSTEAZ!! The main ingredients in the muffins are sorghum flour and millet flour. I was a bit nervous about the millet. We did some experimental baking last summer with millet and it was AWFUL. We made chocolate chip cookies and while they were baking, they smelled like barf. They tasted fine until the aftertaste came. It was barfy too. Or is it barfesque... Either way, they were gross so I didn't get my hopes too high for these muffins, but decided it was worth trying them. This muffin mix has a can of actual blueberries to mix in with the batter too, not just those little blueberry flavored pellets.

In full disclosure, the label does say that the mix contains milk. However, the only milk ingredient listed is "natural and artificial flavors (contains milk derivatives)" and this is in the part of the ingredient list that says "Contains less than 2% of the following." Since Raya's milk allergy is not anaphylactic and the amount of "milk derivative" is relatively tiny, this will likely not affect her.

I hurried and whipped up the muffins in time for her to take one to feeding therapy yesterday. I never know how she's going to react to me telling her I have something new for her to try but she was really excited about the muffins. I had to admit, they looked good, smelled good, and they looked like normal muffins, unlike some (okay a lot. most.) of the other baked goods I've tried to make her.

Sometimes she has a hard time deciding what to take to therapy and what to take for lunch, but yesterday she told me as soon as she walked in the door that she wanted to take some of her SO Delicious coconut milk yogurt, half a banana, and one of the muffins I had made.

I can't remember the exact price but it was around $3.90. The price on Amazon.com is $3.50 so it's a little bit cheaper than Walmart and with free shipping through Amazon Prime. I also saw that there is a Honey Cornbread mix that doesn't have rice flour in it so we will have to try that too! Lots of exciting possibilities there! Raya likes hot dogs so I think it would be fun to be able to make corn dogs for her and see if she likes them.

We have seen some pretty incredible progress in the last month. The schedule changes at school vs what her schedule was last year forced us to rearrange her tube feeding and eating schedule, and those changes have proven to be a great thing for her. She has had spurts over the last few years where she ate a couple hundred calories a day off & on for a while, but for nearly the last 3 weeks, she has consistently hit 400 calories a day. She has had a couple days in the 300 range and one or two below that, but mostly over 400 calories and she even had one day over 700. (mostly Chick Fil A fries and sauce that day, but still a lot!) The consistency from day to day is what has been so encouraging about this trend. She did hit a little bit of a wall a week or two ago where she just seemed fatigued with the idea of eating that day, but she bounced back quickly and has kept on going. She is just amazing and I am so proud of her! She has found motivation in knowing that the more she eats during the day, the less formula she needs in the evening after she has gone to sleep. She also knows that eating more means she gets to "be unplugged" and she likes that.

Having new foods to try, especially in the areas that are lacking in her diet like grains, is very encouraging and we are excited to see her continue to progress!

This series has been a long time in the making. Back when Raya got her NG tube, I had no idea there were so many different adhesives on the market. At the hospital, they had used some kind of fabric tape in a box that had to be cut with scissors and that was the ONLY thing we accidentally left at the hospital. Raya caught her little pinky finger on the tube a couple days after we got home and the only medical tape I had ended up bringing home was Durapore. Sensory Processing Disorder: How to Make a Weighted Blanket

Lately I've been toying with the idea of making Raya a weighted blanket. She loves heavy things and has a lot of sensory seeking behaviors in regards to proprioception. Translation: she craves sensory input that helps her to gain awareness of where her body is in space, and it takes stronger than average input for her to get the feedback that her body is craving. (or at least that's how I understand it :) She seeks out "heavy work" activities, like carrying heavy things, pushing heavy things around on the floor (chairs, full laundry baskets, etc), and anything that gives heavy resistance to her muscles and joints. Lucky for us, carrying her backpack is a good heavy work activity because the poor kid gets to do that for a few hours a day. :)
The idea behind a weighted blanket and other heavy work activities is that when the child gains greater body awareness through proprioceptive input, the nervous system can be calmed and the need for constant fidgiting, moving, jump…

Feeding Tube Terminology: G tube words

One of the many things I didn't have a clue about before Raya got her G tube was the fact that there are LOTS of different kinds of G tubes, all with similar but different features & functions. Some of the terminology that was tossed around in the beginning was very confusing. When I met with the surgeon to pick out a button for when Raya's initial tube was ready to be changed, they pulled a bunch of tubes out of a cupboard, put them down on the table in front of me and said, "What kind do you want?" I had NO idea what to pick, all I knew was that anything would be better than what we had at that point.
