2011 was without a doubt a MUCH better year for Raya. She spent ZERO nights in the hospital, FINALLY got the vomiting under control, successfully started using her stomach again, gained some weight and kept it on, made huge progress with physical therapy and occupational therapy, and discovered that food is not as revolting as she once thought. We had some small scares and a few tests and procedures but nowhere near what things were like in 2010.
I have no idea what 2012 will have in store for us. If I had to pick one word to move into the new year with, it would be POTENTIAL. In spite of the fact that it's often difficult for me to imagine Raya not needing a feeding tube anymore, I do believe that she has the potential to learn to eat and to learn to WANT to eat. I think it would be unfair and ultimately frustrating to set a goal for a specific date or time frame to have Raya weaned off of her feeding tube because there are so many factors involved. (Even catching a cold sets her back because she doesn't swallow when she has a stuffy nose.) Instead of doing that, I think the best thing we can do for Raya is to continue celebrating the small victories, being patient with the setbacks, and setting small goals when she reaches previous goals.
Here's to a happy and healthy 2012!
Happy New Year! Now let's eat some butter. :)
